Nitrogen (N) management is directly affected by water management, because of N’s solubility. Research at University of Nebraska’s Water Resources Laboratory near Brule, Nebraska USA demonstrates some of the challenges and complexities involved with the interaction of water and nitrogen. To date the results of this research has been mixed. With uniform soils, results show that as irrigation level and N level increase, yields increase as well. In highly variable soils results vary temporally, showing no response to VRI or VRN at times and well-defined responses at other times.
